Travelling to a foreign country when you don't speak the language can be a really stressful experience. Yes, you can show your printed hotel reservation to a taxi driver in the airport, hoping that they'll take you to the right place. You can find a restaurant with an English menu. You can use a sign language all the way. But you can't communicate properly, you pay double prices for everything from taxi to souvenirs, and you miss you chance to get to know the culture and people.
To avoid all these problems it makes sense to hire an interpreter. Someone who doesn't just speak the local language, but who's ready to stay on your side during your trip, give you all necessary advice and help you with all your needs.

How to choose an interpreter.
It's always better to use a recommended person, someone who already worked for a person you know. If it's not the case, then just go through local websites and read them carefully. Choose the best ones and send your enquiry, providing a bit of information about yourself and your requirements, the dates and the purpose of your visit.
After you get the answers, don't hesitate to give them a call. Unfortunately, not all of them can really speak English as well as they claim, and a phone conversation will make it quite clear, at the same time helping you to make your first impression about the person you're dealing with: how professional is their approach, how friendly is their attitude. Choose the one which you feel a connection with. Remember - an interpreter is someone you're going to spend your time with, so you should at least feel a little sympathy to them.

Dealing with a marriage agency
Another thing you need to know is that marriage agencies usually refuse to work with independent translators. If you're coming to Odessa to meet a girl you've met through a marriage agency, be ready to deal with their employee translator. Their rules about it are really strict; if you're trying to bring an independent translator to a meeting, the girl might as well refuse to show up at all. They claim it to be a matter of personal security, because the girl doesn't know you at all and feels more secure when someone she knows is also presented at the meeting.
You might find this fact pretty annoying. When the person works for you personally, you can be sure that you're getting the truth. Interpreters who work for marriage agencies are usually deeply involved in the business, so they will always say what the agency wants them to say. Well, try and talk to the girl you're meeting, explaining to her that you want to hire an independent interpreter. Sometimes girls don't mind that.

Pricing
The average price for interpreting services in Odessa is $15/hour. It might vary from $10 to $20/hour, depending on the amount of hours and difficulty of the work. Giving tips for a good job is a normal thing, too, but it's not obligatory.

Things to remember
First of all, remember that the interpreter is going to spend quite a lot of time next to you, so try and choose someone you like, someone you feel you can trust. Apparently this point is much more important than trying to find someone with a perfect Oxford accent.

When you talk, make reasonable pauses after each phrase, to give your interpreter a chance to translate what you've just said. Don't forget that the interpreter is a human being, not a machine, and they can't store ten pages of information in their mind. If you want the translation to be precise, don't talk longer than a couple of minutes.
Don't forget that you interpreter might get tired, especially after working long hours. Doing translations is a tiring job, even if they're translating simple conversations. So don't be surprised if the translation becomes slower and less precise after midnight.
